What is check-in schema?

First let’s start with the basics. Schema markup is code that you add to your website that helps search engines and LLMs better categorize and comprehend your content. Because schema markup follows a standard protocol, LLMs and search engines see schema as a system of signals that improve how quickly it can understand your content, and the better it understands your content, the more likely that search engine or LLM will suggest your content as an appropriate answer to someone’s searches.

Think of schema like a common language that search engines and LLMs all understand clearly.

Check-in schema, according to Schema.org, is defined as the following:

The act of an agent communicating (service provider, social media, etc) their arrival by registering/confirming for a previously reserved service (e.g. flight check-in) or at a place (e.g. hotel), possibly resulting in a result (boarding pass, etc).

So check-in schema is used on your website to communicate that your business was in a location, registering some service at some time.

How does check-in schema support your SEO?

Think of check-in schema as your website raising a flag to Google saying, “we were here, at this location rendering top-notch service.” Google crawls your website, sees the schema markup, and interprets your business as locally relevant. Do this enough, and Google understands your business to be super active in the community rendering service and is more likely to recommend you for people searching locally.

What types of businesses can benefit from check-in schema?

If your business is a local service business, and if your business is trying to optimize for local search visibility, check-in schema may be a great choice for your website.

Local service businesses are businesses who serve a specific local area only – that is, they can only really take customers/clients from one limited geographic area. Local service businesses may include businesses with jobsites – where they have to go from job to job within one geographic area.

Examples of businesses with jobsites who depend on local searches: construction, remodeling, roofing, electricians, pest control, handyman, fencing experts, plumbers, and more.

So let’s say that you’re a local service business and you’re ready to optimize your website for local visibility and get more local leads. How would you do that?

How GeoUP works

Allen App Tools specializes in automation, and built a tool that automates the process of placing SEO-rich schema on your website in a clever way. Here’s our process:

1) Your team gets access to the GeoUP app

The GeoUP app runs on your phone and is super easy to use.

2) A team member is on a jobsite and takes a picture of the work they’re doing

Take a picture of the work/project happening on site, and be sure to avoid capturing photos of anyone who doesn’t consent to having their face showing on your website. Some clients may prefer not to have their address showing, or identifying information about where they live – we recommend always clearing this with the client. This photo is going on the website, so try to make sure it has excellent lighting, quality, and a subject that is clearly in view.

3) Upload the photo to GeoUP

The team member can upload the photo directly into GeoUP by creating a new Check In, or can send this to someone back at their headquarters to upload for them, no problem. If you’re sending the photo back to someone at HQ, be sure to text them the photo and the address you took the photo at – no worries, the address will not be shown on your website, but it’s needed for the check-in schema to work.

4) Write a keyword-rich description of what is happening in this photo

Be as descriptive as possible about what’s in the photo: try to use keywords that your business cares about. For example, here’s a SEO-friendly description for a roofing company: “Today we are here in Chicago, IL doing a roof installation for a new client. We’re using high quality metal shingles to stand up to the strong winds and storms here in Chicago.” Notice in this example we used the keyword we care about “roof installation” and used locally relevant terms like “Chicago” without revealing the client’s exact location.

5) Click post, and watch the magic happen

Posting the photo means that the following things are about to go on your brand’s website: the image, the rich description you wrote, and the invisible check-in schema that flags to Google and LLMs how locally relevant and active your business is.

6) Measure and improve

Be sure to work with a digital marketing expert (the team at GeoUP can help with this) to establish a clear measurement plan when using GeoUP. Typically our clients are looking for the following KPIs to increase: organic search visibility, LLM search visibility, increased local rankings for critical keywords, increased web traffic, and most critically, increased local leads and revenue.
